Sources & how this is calculated
Theobromine content per chocolate type and the mg/kg clinical thresholds above come from the Merck Veterinary Manual, "Chocolate Toxicosis in Animals" . Where Merck publishes a range (semisweet/dark chocolate: 150–160 mg/oz), this calculator uses the higher, more conservative figure. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center toxicology brief (Gwaltney-Brant, 2001) publishes lower theobromine figures across the board — milk chocolate 58 mg/oz, dark sweet chocolate 130, semi-sweet chips 138, baker's chocolate 393, dry cocoa powder 737 — against Merck's 64, 150–160, 440 and 807. This calculator defaults to Merck's higher numbers throughout so it errs on the side of warning sooner, not later. The two sources agree exactly on the doses that matter: mild signs from 20 mg/kg, severe/cardiotoxic effects at 40–50, seizures at 60, and an oral LD50 of 100–200 mg/kg.
