Sources & how this is calculated

Theobromine content per chocolate type and the mg/kg clinical thresholds above come from the Merck Veterinary Manual, "Chocolate Toxicosis in Animals" . Where Merck publishes a range (semisweet/dark chocolate: 150–160 mg/oz), this calculator uses the higher, more conservative figure. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center toxicology brief publishes slightly lower figures for milk chocolate (44 mg/oz) and baker's chocolate (390 mg/oz) — we default to Merck's higher numbers throughout so this tool errs on the side of warning sooner, not later.

This tool estimates theobromine dose only. It cannot account for a dog's individual health conditions, other ingredients (like xylitol in some chocolate products), or how much time has passed since ingestion. It is not a substitute for veterinary care.
